Lasser could feel the tension building, matching the heat that had built up in the house. Frowning, he went from room to room opening windows, his shirt clinging to his back.

Having a kip in the afternoon had left him feeling drowsy and lethargic.

Odette had headed home, her face etched with worry. Now Lasser was beginning to feel the same way.

Pulling out his phone, he sighed, no missed calls from Bannister and no voicemails with him ranting on about Mills and Ryan.

Yanking the back door open, he stepped out onto the small, flagged area he laughingly thought of as a patio, the sun was slowly vanishing and he sighed heavily as the heat disappeared with it.

When his phone began to vibrate, he snatched it from his pocket and frowned when he saw Susan Coyle's name flashing on the screen.

'All right, Susan, what can I do for you?'

'Good evening, sir.'

The phone went quiet for a few seconds and Lasser plonked himself into a rickety garden chair.

'I'm at the Walls' house.'

Lasser yawned. 'Not ringing from the hot tub I hope?'

'No, sir, we've just had to escort Martin Walls from the premises.'

Lasser fumbled out his cigarettes. 'Why?'

'He had some kind of argument with Shelly Walls; she's very shaken up…'

'What were they arguing about?'

'To be honest I'm not entirely sure, PC Black's in the house and Walls has just driven away, but he looked…' she paused as if searching for the right word.

'Wired?' Lasser offered.

'Furious, scared, I don't know what went on, but it must have been major. We were standing at the front of the house and all of a sudden she was at the upstairs window screaming her head off.'

Lasser sparked up a cigarette. 'Did he lay a finger on her?'

'I don't think it had got to that stage, but if we hadn't been there…' she drifted to a halt and Lasser grunted in understanding.

'Listen, Susan, I don't know if you've heard but me and Odette have been told to butt out of the investigation?'

'I think it stinks,' she snapped.

'Hopefully it's only temporary, but for the moment Ryan seems to be running things around here, so…'

'But someone needs to follow this up; Walls looked as if he was set to kill someone.'

Lasser eased forward, the chair creaked alarmingly. 'What about DI Fletcher, have you tried him?'

'Not yet.'

'Any reason why not?'

He heard the sigh float down out of the phone. 'I'm sorry, I shouldn't have contacted you, it was out of order.'

Lasser drummed the fingers of one hand against his knee. 'Fuck it,' he hissed.

'Sorry, what did you say?'

'Leave it with me, Susan, but when this goes tits up – and it will – I don't want you telling anyone about this conversation.'

'But…'

'I mean it, I'm already in deep shit, but you don't want Ryan turning his poison gaze in your direction.'

'My lips are sealed.'

Lasser smiled. 'By the way, did Shelly Walls produce a diary for you?'

'Not yet, do you want me to ask her?'

'Let things cool down and see what she has to
